If you’re considering or have undergone scarless breast augmentation or transaxillary breast augmentation, you may be wondering how your daily routines may be impacted. While scarless breast implant surgery is associated with a smooth and fast recovery, optimal healing requires following your post-operative instructions carefully. In this blog, we’ll discuss typical recovery timelines for scarless breast augmentation and how it’ll affect your return to exercise routines.

Is Recovery From Scarless Breast Augmentation Different Than Traditional Breast Surgery?

Scarless breast implant surgery, or transaxillary breast augmentation, uses a small incision hidden within the natural underarm crease rather than placing an incision on the breast itself. This technique places breast implants through the armpit rather than through a traditional breast crease incision. Using an implant funnel, Dr. Lo can place either silicone or saline breast implants through a 1 1⁄2-inch armpit incision. The primary advantage of the transaxillary method is that any visible scarring is hidden within the armpit creases, becoming practically “invisible.”

Many patients find recovery to be relatively straightforward, though individual healing experiences vary. The incision site is barely visible throughout the healing process, blending into the armpit. Scars are kept minimal, and your saline or silicone implants enhance breast size and shape.

Recovery and Exercise Timeline for Scarless Breast Augmentation

Returning to regular exercise and physical fitness after scarless breast augmentation is a gradual process.

Days 1 to 3

The first day after surgery, you may start experiencing varying degrees of slight discomfort, including:

  • Mild pain or discomfort
  • Tightness
  • Soreness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

Patients may shower after the first day and continue to wear the supportive bra provided by Dr. Lo. These symptoms typically improve gradually during the first several days of recovery. Most patients take over-the-counter pain medications. Pain medications may be prescribed if necessary.

Activity as tolerated is encouraged! Walking throughout the day to support circulation is a must. Range-of-motion exercises for your arms are necessary to prevent stiffness. However, strenuous activities should be avoided during the first few days.

Days 4 to 7

Many patients return to work within several days if they have a desk job. Driving may be resumed once you are no longer taking prescription pain medication and can comfortably operate a vehicle. Bruising and swelling often improve significantly during the first week, although some residual swelling may persist. Deodorant and shaving can be started after day 5. It’s still important to avoid strenuous activity and exercise. Lifting heavy objects over 10 pounds can still delay proper healing and negatively affect your results.

Weeks 2 to 4

Most women feel comfortable resuming light aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking outside or treadmill cardio, around 2 to 3 weeks post-op. As you feel more comfortable, lower-body workouts may be resumed.

However, heavy lifting and resistance training, especially upper body routines, should still be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks. Dr. Lo will provide appropriate exercise recommendations based on your individual situation, needs, and physical abilities.

Week 4 and Beyond

At this point, most patients are well into the recovery process and gradually returning to their regular exercise routines. Swelling and discomfort are resolved by this stage of recovery. It’s at this point that many patients begin to appreciate their results more fully as healing continues. Any visible scarring around the armpits will continue to fade. Total recovery also depends on whether you choose to undergo combination procedures with your scarless breast augmentation.

Safest Physical Activity During Scarless Breast Augmentation Recovery

Many light exercises and activities can help support your body as it recovers from breast augmentation. These include:

  • Walking: This is typically the safest form of activity during scarless breast augmentation recovery. Short, light cardio can boost circulation and prevent stiffness from too much rest.
  • Gentle Lower-Body Movements: In addition to walking, simple movements like gentle leg exercises can help keep your body active while avoiding reduced blood flow.
  • Light Arm and Shoulder Mobility: Gentle arm and shoulder movements will help maintain range of motion and avoid stiffness right after surgery.

Other Post-op Routines for Transaxillary Breast Augmentation

Beyond exercise, Dr. Lo also recommends:

  • Washing and applying antibiotic ointment to the incision site once a day
  • Taking prescribed medications (antibiotics) as directed
  • Consistently wearing your surgical bra as directed
  • Staying well-rested, hydrated, and nourished
